Literacy centre benefits Hamilton neighbourhood

CareGo President & CEO Demetrius Tsafaridis was a guest of honour at the October 19th 2014 opening of a literacy and learning centre in north-end Hamilton.

Demetrius is a former chairman of the board for the Robert Land Community Association, which operates a neighbourhood hub providing supports and services to low-income residents. CareGo, its employees, and Demetrius personally, supported the years-long effort to source and convert a 1954 rail car into “The Literacy Express.”

Demetrius spoke at a ceremony which included Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell; Ontario Deputy Premier Deb Matthews and Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina. “With every child who gets mesmerized by a book, with every kid who discovers that he loves to learn and with every family that is strengthened by this new resource, we are building a better community,” Demetrius said at the podium.

The ceremony celebrated Hamilton philanthropist Larry Paikin and his family, and the train car is formally called The Larry Paikin Literacy Express.
